Bonus Content: Copper Is at $6.54 a Pound. Freeport Just Proved It

A note from our friends at Investors Alley(ad)

Hi, Tim Plaehn here.

Nvidia is one of the biggest winners of the AI boom.

But if you bought it for income…

You’d collect a dividend yield of about 0.5% a year.

I found another way to collect income from AI stocks like Nvidia…

Using one small fund that pays investors every single Thursday.

Its annualized distribution rate has been 34%.

And it could deliver up to $1,051 in a single month.

See here how it works.

To your income,

Copper Is at $6.54 a Pound. Freeport Just Proved It

The AI boom needs copper. That is not a metaphor. Every data center requires it for power distribution, cooling loops, wiring, and transformers. S&P Global has flagged AI and data centers as a meaningful contributor to copper demand growth in the second half of this decade. The four largest hyperscalers have collectively guided to well over $700 billion of 2026 capital spending, much of it tied to AI infrastructure. Freeport-McMoRan is one of the largest publicly traded beneficiaries of that demand, and Tuesday it showed exactly how profitable $6.54 copper can be.

Why This Stock Now

Freeport reported Q3 earnings Tuesday morning, beating analyst estimates on both lines. Adjusted EPS came in at $0.88 versus the $0.82 consensus. Revenue reached $7.55 billion against a $7.36 billion estimate. Net income rose about 74% year over year, and realized copper prices rose 40%, from $4.68 per pound in last year’s third quarter to $6.54 this year. LME copper cash-settlement prices were about $6.63 per pound on October 26. The momentum has not reversed.

Management guided to higher Q4 volumes, with consolidated copper sales expected to rise from 749 million pounds in Q3 to about 875 million pounds in Q4. FCX stock closed Tuesday at $65.95, up 1.2%, and is now up roughly 30% year to date, which understates the forward story considerably.

The Business

Freeport operates large copper and gold mines across the United States, South America, and Indonesia. Its crown asset is the Grasberg minerals district in Central Papua, Indonesia, one of the largest copper and gold deposits on the planet. After an external mud rush incident in September 2025 disrupted operations, the mine is now 67% ramped back toward full capacity. Management said it expects Grasberg to reach 80% of capacity in mid-2027 and approach full capacity by year-end 2027.

That ramp is the growth engine. For 2026, Freeport expects consolidated copper sales to approximate 3.0 billion pounds. Management has also pointed to significant growth expected in 2027 and 2028 as the Grasberg ramp continues. The operating leverage is substantial, but specific EBITDA sensitivities and scenario EBITDA figures are not detailed in the company’s Q3 release.

Why Wall Street Is Paying Attention

U.S. customers are telling Freeport directly what is driving demand. In Tuesday’s commentary, management highlighted continued strength in domestic demand tied to electricity and energy infrastructure, data center builds, and transportation electrification. That customer-level confirmation is more useful than any macroeconomic forecast.

Freeport is not the only major miner navigating this tension between record prices and production execution. BHP just reported a 19% drop in copper output at the same moment cash copper settled at an all-time high, sharpening the question of which miner actually captures the price.

Several analysts raised numbers ahead of the report, and the Street’s target range implies upside from here. Operating cash flow guidance for the full year 2026 is about $8.5 billion, assuming $6.50 copper. With spot prices hovering around that level, the guidance still leans on assumptions that can move quickly with copper prices and volumes.

Freeport also returned just over $300 million to shareholders via share repurchases in the first nine months of 2026, while carrying $4.3 billion in cash at quarter-end. The financial position is not the problem.

What’s Driving the Opportunity

Three catalysts layer on top of the base case. First, the Grasberg ramp is a multi-year volume growth story that does not depend on copper prices staying elevated. Second, management expects to reach an investment decision on a Bagdad expansion in Arizona during Q4, and the company has cited a current capital estimate under review that indicates incremental costs could approximate $4.5 billion. Third, its leaching initiatives continue to expand: the company has described a path to increase recoverable copper from leach stockpiles from about 220 million pounds per year to 300 million pounds in 2027, with potential for additional gains thereafter.

What Could Go Wrong

Full-year 2026 copper sales guidance is about 3.0 billion pounds, and execution risk remains in the U.S., Chile and Indonesia. Unit net cash costs came in at $2.07 per pound versus the company’s prior estimate of $2.00. Cost discipline at Grasberg remains the most important variable for margin delivery in 2027.

Copper tariff uncertainty has rattled the stock before. Any White House action on copper import policy could create short-term volatility, even though Freeport’s position as America’s largest copper producer would likely benefit from domestic sourcing preferences over time.

The Bottom Line

Freeport sits at the intersection of two of the most durable capital themes in markets today: AI infrastructure and electrification. Its outlook centers on higher volumes as Grasberg returns toward normalized operations, alongside U.S. growth projects like Bagdad and continued gains from leaching. The price the market is paying for that growth, roughly 31 times trailing earnings, does not fully reflect what the next leg of the volume ramp could look like if execution holds. The Q3 beat confirmed that Freeport can harvest elevated prices with discipline. Q4 will show what happens when volume catches up.
