Netflix Is Down in 2026. Earnings on Oct. 20 Could Change That.

Netflix enters its October 20 earnings report as one of the more counterintuitive situations in large-cap media. The company has guided to full-year 2026 revenue of $51.0 billion to $51.4 billion, operating margin guidance of 31.5%, and it has reiterated an expectation of roughly $3 billion in advertising revenue in 2026. The stock has spent most of 2026 declining anyway.

The Q2 report landed badly. In the second quarter, Netflix’s revenue grew 13.4% to $12.56 billion, operating income rose to $4.19 billion, and net income increased to $3.40 billion. Third-quarter revenue guidance of $12.86 billion implied about 11% foreign exchange-neutral growth, contributing to a negative market reaction. Shares fell more than 8% in after-hours trading after the report. By early October, Netflix was trading near $67, close to its summer low, while the S&P 500 was up roughly 14% for the year.

Netflix is scheduled to report earnings on October 20, 2026, after market close. Analysts’ consensus estimates ahead of the report place third-quarter diluted EPS near $0.82 and revenue near $12.87 billion. Those headline figures matter less than Q4 guidance and any concrete update on the advertising tier’s trajectory.

The ad business is the part Wall Street is slowest to price in. Building out the ads business continues to be a top priority, and the company has said it remains on track to deliver approximately $3 billion in ads revenue in 2026, about double 2025. Research firm Omdia has forecast Netflix ad revenue could exceed $8 billion by 2030. There is strong interest in the live events lineup, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup rights the company has announced for the U.S. and Canada in 2027 and 2031, as well as WWE and MLB events, alongside continued demand for the breadth of entertainment titles.

On October 2, Disney agreed to license additional content to Netflix, including titles like the Ice Age movies, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and Will Trent. Disney still competes with Netflix through Disney+ and Hulu, yet it clearly sees something valuable in Netflix’s audience, which Netflix has previously said is more than 325 million paid memberships. Industry metrics suggest licensed programming represents roughly 40% of Netflix’s global TV series catalog and can account for about half of new series-driven Netflix signups.

The counterarguments are credible. HSBC downgraded the stock to Hold on September 22 and cut its Netflix price target to $76. Wells Fargo holds the most cautious view, with an Underweight rating and a $57 target. Both point to slowing revenue growth and rising content spend following Netflix’s decision to invest about $20 billion in content.

Full-year revenue guidance stands at $51.0 billion to $51.4 billion and operating margin guidance sits at 31.5%. Free cash flow guidance is approximately $12.5 billion, which includes a $2.8 billion termination fee tied to a Warner Bros. Discovery transaction that was terminated earlier this year. Strip that out and the underlying figure is closer to $9.7 billion. A stock near its July low with those cash flows and a rapidly scaling ad business is not obviously expensive. The October 20 report needs to confirm that Q3 guidance was the floor, not the trend.
